Cupcakes’ Journey

Dessert Reception follows the film.

Set in Tel Aviv, Cupcakes is a feel-good musical comedy about a group of neighbors who get together to watch Universong, a Eurovision style television song contest. The evening is an opportunity for the group – a high-strung aide to a cabinet minister; a shy, awkward blogger with a lisp; a former model who is unfulfilled by both her job as a corporate lawyer and her relationship with her boss; a singer-songwriter whose career is in a rut; a male nursery school teacher whose long term pin-up boyfriend is still in the closet; and a successful bakery shop owner whose marriage is falling apart – to get away from the stresses of their daily lives. When the friends learn that Anat is upset because her husband has left her, they compose a song to cheer her up and “A Song for Anat” unexpectedly becomes Israel’s entry for the Universong contest.

One by one, they reluctantly agree to overcome their fears, live life rather than observe it, and band together to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Cupcakes is a celebration of music, friendship, love and free spirit.

“Watching Cupcakes is like taking an extravagant 90-minute vacation from reality, and who couldn’t use a vacation these days?” – Jerusalem Post

“With feel good music by Babydaddy (Scissor Sisters), Technicolor styling à la Almodóvar and an unashamedly entertaining storyline that could have come from Friends, this hit musical comedy is the guiltiest pleasure of the year.” – UK Jewish Film Festival

Cupcakes is wonderfully entertaining kitsch and is as deliciously saccharine as a film can get.” – The Jewish Daily Forward
